“From the very beginning, the performance created a sacred threshold that transformed the theater. Rather, it transformed my perceptions of the theater and all the spaces beyond it, as a place where colonial systems and lives are being reiterated, but also healed and reinvented. So beautifully executed!” – Alex W.

“H.O.L.Y. City expressed feelings of unresolved tensions from experiences of intrusion, in ways that words can’t articulate. It expressed the resilience of people amidst trauma, and their different forms of release. You can feel each person’s experiences are carried with them through it all.” – J. Theo

H.O.L.Y. (Hate Often Loves You) CITY is an investigation of what it means to cultivate “sanctuary” in San Francisco/Yelamu. Where can we seek refuge in these perilous times? How do we protect ourselves and one other? Why is that which we revere most holy often met with the most hate? Envisioned and directed by interdisciplinary artist and choreographer, Sammay Dizon, with collaborating performing artists – Jose Abad, Gabriel De Leon, Raúl Torres-Bonilla, and Keisha Turner – this multimedia, experimental dance theater work will take an uncomfortably intimate look at the violence against POC and how we create safety for ourselves in this sanctuary city.
